Listed for sale is a monumental dining set, crafted by Ru Amagasu, son of Mira Nakashima and grandson of George Nakashima. This set is extraordinary for a number of reasons. The conoid chairs were crafted from solid Wenge, a sought after African hardwood. The dining table features a Redwood root burl top with solid Wenge base. Both wood species are rare, difficult to work with, and very expensive. Moreover, we have never come across any conoid chairs or dining tables by George or Mira Nakashima, which used Wenge as a material for furniture elements in their construction. The work of George and Mira more commonly used American black walnut. This was seemingly an effort to build upon the familial dialogue, working with an atypical material, which is also challenging to work with. With reference to the conoid chairs, they are in terrific condition with some light wear from use. When ordering, the client originally ordered six, though enough material was available for a seventh chair and thus seven were produced for the set. The pieces were produced in 2007 for a client in Manhattan. The Redwood root burl top is stunning and in lovely shape. It can be re-oiled before delivery if you wish. The table similarly shows light wear, though is in lovely overall condition. The chairs measure 36 tall x 20 inches wide and 19 inches deep.
